Why Hamilton is a Must-See in London

Lin-Manuel Miranda’s revolutionary musical tells the compelling story of American Founding Father Alexander Hamilton, an immigrant who rose from obscurity to become a pivotal figure in shaping the United States. What makes Hamilton truly unique is its vibrant score, a groundbreaking fusion of hip-hop, jazz, blues, rap, R&B, and traditional Broadway styles. It’s a dynamic and thrilling way to experience history, told by a cast that reflects the diverse face of America today.

Beyond the captivating music and innovative storytelling, Hamilton has garnered unprecedented critical acclaim and a shelf full of awards. Following its sensational success off-Broadway and on Broadway – where it received a record-setting 16 Tony Award nominations, winning 11, plus a Pulitzer Prize and a Grammy – the West End production continued this legacy, securing a remarkable seven Olivier Awards in 2018, including Best New Musical.

Fascinating Facts to Enhance Your Hamilton Experience

Delve deeper into the world of Hamilton with these intriguing facts:

  • The creation of Hamilton was a monumental undertaking, with Lin-Manuel Miranda working on the score for seven years, from 2008 to 2015. It all started when he read Ron Chernow’s biography of Alexander Hamilton while on vacation and envisioned the story as a musical.
  • The show is renowned for its lyrical density. The song “Guns and Ships” is particularly famous for containing some of the fastest rapping in Broadway history!
  • While taking some creative liberties for dramatic effect, the musical is largely historically accurate, with lyrics often incorporating lines from actual letters and historical documents. The Guardian even ranked Hamilton as the second-greatest theatrical work since 2000.
