Dominion  Theatre

The Dominion Theatre is a 2,069-seat West End theatre located in the heart of the West End. With a long and varied history as both a cinema and a home of live performance, the Dominion Theatre has been entertaining audiences since 1929.

About the Dominion Theatre

Located at the intersection of Charing Cross Road, Oxford Street and Tottenham Court Road, the Dominion Theatre’s excellent transport links, and world-class entertainment, has enabled the almost-100 year old venue to thrive.

The History of the Dominion Theatre

The first major use of The Dominion Theatre as a live venue came when the Judy Garland Show_ ran from Wednesday 16 October to Saturday 16 November 1957. Before this, the building had predominantly been used as a cinema, until the blitz put an end to the screenings.

Samuel Goldwyn had patiently waited more than three years to open Porgy and Bess_ here but South Pacific’s_ success did not rub off on it. It was The Sound of Music_ (29 March 1965 to 29 June 1968) that confirmed The Dominion Theatre’s pull as a home of musicals.

Since the early 1990s The Dominion Theatre has played host to David Ian and Paul Nicholas’ new production of Grease_, Scrooge: The Musical_, Matthew Bourne’s Swan Lake_, Disney’s Beauty and the Beast_, and Notre Dame de Paris_ among others.

In 2002, the hit stage musical We Will Rock You_, based on the songs of Queen, created by Queen guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor together with British comedian Ben Elton opened. The show was the longest running musical ever to play at The Dominion Theatre.
